Investment Strategy

Is it time to reconsider your investment strategy?

Given the difficulty of attracting and retaining top talent today, many organizations are placing a priority on developing the next generation of leaders within their company, according to a survey of more than 28,000 business leaders conducted by The Conference Board. In fact, 94% of companies will maintain or increase their investment in leadership development in the year ahead (Figure 1).

Many of these investments will be directed at function level leaders, those responsible for leading and managing a function such as operations, marketing, manufacturing, sales, finance and human resources. They may also be responsible for leading and managing an organizational unit such as geographic regions, divisions, product groups, customer segments or business areas, explained Jeff Stoner, SVP of Leadership Development and Coaching Services, MDA Leadership.

The top two goals for this investment is to grow the succession pipeline and retain high potential employees (Figure 2). Stoner said this is not surprising given that function leaders often have the largest organizational impact and are in the pipeline for senior executive roles.

So what skills do these companies wish to develop? Strategic planning and business acumen lead the list, followed by emotional intelligence, the ability to lead innovation, and coaching ability (Figure 3).

And what delivery methods are most popular? Nearly 75 percent of organizations use instructor-led training for leadership development, followed by 63% that leverage executive coaching (Figure 4).

Is it time to rethink your leadership development strategy to place a greater focus on your high-priority function leaders? Could this be the source of your company’s competitive advantage in 2019?

If so, all of these trends come together in MDA Leadership’s Function Leader Development Experience (FLDE), a highly targeted experiential development opportunity, that will be offered in Minneapolis on May 20-22, 2019 with an evening kick off on May 19th.
